Indecopi, in its role as Peru’s National Consumer Protection Authority, is responsible for the protection and defense of your rights as a consumer anywhere in Peru, in accordance with the Consumer Protection and Defense Code (Law 29571).

Since March 15, 2012, the National Authority has been supported by the Director’s Office of the National Consumer Protection Authority, which helps to coordinate and implement all actions needed for the Authority to carry out its duties.

These duties and activities are implemented within the framework of the National Consumer Protection and Defense Policy, based on four strategic pillars: a) education, orientation, and dissemination; b) protection of consumer health and safety; c) mechanisms for the prevention and solution of conflicts between providers and consumers; and d) strengthening of the National Integrated Consumer Protection System.

What are the National Authority’s duties?

The National Authority has the following duties:

It implements the national consumer protection policy and the National Consumer Protection Plan.

It proposes laws and regulations on consumer affairs, with the input of the production, service, and consumer sectors.

It prepares and implements the actions necessary to bolster your protection and the mechanisms for the defense of your rights.

It implements mechanisms for the prevention and solution of conflicts in consumer relations, in accordance with the scope of its competence.

It implements the consumer information and orientation system nationwide.

It coordinates the implementation of the information system on legislation, case law, and other relevant actions and decisions involving consumer relations.

It coordinates the implementation of the recall and early action system for hazardous goods and services identified in the market.

It drafts and submits the annual report on the state of consumer protection in Peru, as well as the indicators contained therein.

It coordinates and presides over the National Integrated Consumer Protection System.

It issues directives for the operation of the National Consumer Protection System, respecting the technical/statutory, functional, administrative, economic, and constitutional autonomy of its members, as applicable.
